Three Options
2011 | Performance | 7 minutes
In this performance, performed several times during the RijksakademieOpen 2011, Beckers discusses the issue of fear and especially how to deal with it. How to deal with a fear of heights, a fear of death or the fear of a parent that one of their children might have injured himself. This after telling a personal story from his youth in which Beckers' mother reacts indifferent after he tell her he just fell out of a tree.
In the performance Beckers comes up with three options to deal with fear, represented by three colorful, geometrical objects. In the end he chooses to use option number three. A choice that has dire consequences for his mother.
“But there’s also a third option to deal with fear. An option that my mother used when she was confronted with the fear that one of my ribs might be broken. And that is, that you just ignore it. Just pretend it’s not happening.”
